Indian Clubweights vary in size and weights, they can weigh between several pounds to as much as 40kg and even higher.  This fascinating training method has its roots in Ancient Warfare.  The clubs were originally known as Jori by the Indian Warriors and Meels by the Iranians.  These two cultures have an ancient world documented history with this training method.

Although traditionally made with wood, cast iron clubweights are now readily available.  The comeback and popularity of clubweights has been slower than that of kettlebells and bodyweight exercises but they should not be overlooked.  Training with clubweights is totally unique due to the shape of the club, it is much harder to duplicate the benefits and effects with either freeweights or kettlebells due to the clubs fantastic leverage challenge.  Despite its obvious benefits for anyone that is involved in martial arts, particularly weapons based arts, it remains an undiscovered superior form of training for all racquet and club sports, that translates directly into a sports specific form of training.  The clubs have also been used for injury rehabilitation throughout their long successful history.

Clubweights will also put a stop to the embarrasing 'cant open the pickles jar' at the family xmas!

The Clubweight Advantage

Clubweights train the grip like nothing else.  Whether pressing, pulling or performing cleans and jerks etc, there is no mercy on the grip.  Clubweights increase shoulder strength and mobility through a more thorough and dynamic range of motion.  There is an activation of deep core muscles throughout all clubweight movements.  Clubweights are the ultimate resistence leverage training tool for the whole body, especially the arms, shoulders and grip strength.

History

Clubweights are thousand of years old with the Indian Wrestlers and Martial Artists of Kalaripayatu, the most famous and widely known practioners.  Many other warrior traditions are included in this extensive historical use.  These include the Japanese, Iranians, Burmese, Filipinos, Russians and Western Physical culture.   Ancient Roman Gladiators and Military were also avid followers of this philosophy.
