Freeweights are currently enjoying a comeback!

Perhaps the failure and pointless use of modern resistance machines has finalled enabled the far superior barbell and dumbell to return to its former glory.  The classic lifts of cleans, cleans and jerks, deadlifts, snatch etc are superb exercises for power, strength and sports specific physical enhancement.  Although freeweights were driven into the background by the machines of modern style gyms, their return has been well received for those looking to properly increase muscle mass, gain real functional strength and power.  These ancient tools have never disappeared from use for olympic athletes, professional fighters and serious trainers.

The Freeweight Advantage

Freeweights do not lock the body into one plane of motion so are superior in building correct functional strength.  The foundation of freeweight exercises is in a standing position, this emphasises correct posture, the chaining and correct transfer of power throughout the body and the often overlooked importance of using the ground as the starting point to release and direct the body's power throughout.  Whether you require more strength to play with your kids, support your back or excel in high level sporting competitions, freeweights have always been and remain the superior choice over resistence machines.

History

The use of freeweights dates back to the Ancient Olympic Green athletes who use dumbells for a variety of functions such as lifting techniques, resistance for running and jumping exercises.  Ancient Eastern, Asian and Western trainers have used freeweights throughout history, sometimes these were crude implements made from stone.  They were and are an important part of physical conditioning.
